The second book in this breakout series that's been called ""charming and delectably sweet."" (Zoraida Córdova, award-winning author of the Brooklyn Brujas series)

Leonora Logroño has finally been introduced to her family's bakery bruja magic—but that doesn't mean everything is all sugar and spice. Her special power hasn't shown up yet, her family still won't let her perform her own spells, and they now act rude every time Caroline comes by to help Leo with her magic training.

She knows that the family magic should be kept secret, but Caroline is her best friend, and she's been feeling lonely ever since her mom passed away. Why should Leo have to choose between being a good bruja and a good friend?

In the midst of her confusion, Leo wakes up one morning to a startling sight: her dead grandmother, standing in her room, looking as alive as she ever was. Both Leo and her abuela realize this might mean trouble—especially once they discover that Abuela isn't the only person in town who has been pulled back to life from the other side.

Spirits are popping up all over town, causing all sorts of trouble! Is this Leo's fault? And can she reverse the spell before it's too late?

Anna Meriano's unforgettable family of brujas returns in a new story featuring a heaping helping of amor, azúcar, and magia.

The Logroo family is preparing for the arrival of the Magi on Da de los Reyes, but surprise visitors throw a wrench in the works in Meriano's sequel to A Dash of Trouble (2018). After the fiasco around Da de los Muertos, Leo has finally been initiated into the family bruja tradition and has begun her apprenticeship in the culinary and magical arts. As the winter holiday break wanes, Leo feels pulled in too many directions: by her mother's expectations, her sisters' advice, and the desire to maintain friendships despite her family's secrets. When she is awakened one morning by the corporeal spirit, she knows something terrible must be amiss and worries that her untrained magical abilities might be the cause. Her abuela has not crossed over alone, however; at least five others with unfinished business have arrived in Rose Hill ahead of Da de los Reyes, leaving trails of marigold petals in their wakes. Leo must find balance between family and friendships in order to return the spirits to el Otro Lado before they are cursed to wander, like La Llorona. Meriano's magical contemporary world is steeped in Latinx culture, and though Leo faces fantastical complications, her struggle to find her place is a universal adolescent experience. Leo and her sisters are half-white and half-Mexican and live in a fairly diverse small town in Texas. A sweet second helping that will leave readers hungry for more. (Fantasy. 9-13)

Listeners will delight in this fun debut, the first installment in a planned series. Leonora is an 11-year-old Tejano girl who has recently discovered that her family's tradition of baking is rooted in brujera--witchcraft. Narrator Kyla Garcia switches deftly from an English narration to a Spanish recitation of the magical recipes in Leo's family's old cookbook. Leo isn't fluent in Spanish, so she uses a dictionary to translate the recipes, ensuring that listeners who don't know Spanish will still understand the essential ingredients. The diverse supporting characters are well developed, aided by Garcia's exceptional narration. Each character gets their own voice that fits their personality. These ingredients imbue the audiobook with a little magic of its own, sure to create loyal fans of the new series. S.P. Winner of AudioFile Earphones Award © AudioFile 2018, Portland, Maine

Kyla Garcia returns to narrate the second book in the Love Sugar Magic series. Spirits are running loose through town, and Leo and her family must round them up and send them back behind the veil. Garcia's reading sparkles with energy and fun--from the warm tones and Hispanic accents of the adults and the fast-talking Spanish of the spirits to the Texas accents of Leo's school friends, the unmistakably teenaged voices of Leo's older sisters, and the more childlike voice of Leo herself. Comic timing heightens the humor of this magical caper as Leo gains confidence in her large family of brujas. Listeners new to the series will be just as delighted as established fans, and an epilogue sets up the next audiobook in the series. S.C. © AudioFile 2019, Portland, Maine

Narrator Kyla Garcia does a masterful job of making this young adult tale of witches running a bakery believable. She infuses Leo with a playful intensity that conjures her ambition to use her mother's magical recipes. Listeners who are looking for a unique listening experience as well as a diverting story will be entranced by Garcia's performance. She is peppy, upbeat, and rapid in her delivery, all of which mirror the character perfectly. The life of Leo's Latino family in small-town Texas is full of dramatic opportunities. Garcia maximizes all of them with her enthusiastic performance. She captures the cadence of the Spanish words scattered throughout the text as well as the spirited group of witches training Leo to channel her own magic. M.R. © AudioFile 2020, Portland, Maine

In this effervescent kickoff to the Love Sugar Magic series, Leonora “Leo” Logroño is tired of being the baby of the family: her four older sisters all speak Spanish and get to help out at the family bakery, especially as they prepare for Diá de los Muertos. Then Leo discovers that her mother and sisters are actually brujas, able to bake magic spells into their pastries. “Our power comes from the magic of sweetness,” explains one sister. “Sweetness from love and sweetness from sugar.” Leo will be initiated at age 15, but she can’t wait to try her hand at magic, resulting in a love spell that goes horribly wrong. Meriano’s first novel is steeped in Mexican culture, family lore, and delicious baked goods. Readers who don’t speak Spanish will share in Leo’s confusion (the magical recipes are all written in Spanish), and those who do will enjoy being in on the family’s secrets. A warmhearted read that will satisfy readers and leave them eager for a second helping. Art not seen by PW. A Cake Literary property. Ages 8–12. In the second book set in and around the Logroo family's Amor y Azcar Panaderia bakery, Leonora's friend Caroline tries her own hand at brujera. In so doing she bungles a spell to see her deceased mother, instead summoning spirits from el Otro Lado. A wide-ranging cast tries to send them back; the result is pure slapstick. Meriano smoothly incorporates universal pre-adolescent issues of friendship and family throughout the novel.

Following her discovery in Love Sugar Magic: A Dash of Trouble (rev. 3/18) that she (like all the females in her family) is a bruja, Leonora Logroo is busy learning about potions and spells while working in the family's bakery, Amor y Azcar Panaderia. Such intense study, however, locks out her BFF Caroline, so Caroline (who acquired a little knowledge of spells in the earlier book), decides to try a little brujera on her own. She manages to bungle a spell to see her recently deceased mother once again, summoning a gang of spirits from el Otro Lado. A wide-ranging cast of characters (fully introduced in the first volume, but perhaps confusing for those new to the series) tries to contain the spirits and send them back; the result is pure slapstick, conjuring up images of the Keystone Cops playing Whac-A-Mole. Meriano smoothly incorporates universal pre-adolescent issues of friendship and family relationships throughout, as well as including a poignant scene in which the spirit of Caroline's mother discusses the grieving process. With an intriguing epilogue, it appears that the Logroo family may be cooking up yet another volume in the series. Buen provecho! betty carter
