Most of us have some feeling for fashion and have a vague idea of what's in and what's out. Less familiar to most, however, is the way fashion works as a global business. Know-It-All Fashion looks beyond the surface of this billion-dollar industry. Each entry is summarized in under a minute–using nothing more than two pages, 300 words, and one picture. Leading fashion experts provide an engrossing crash course in how the style world works today, alongside an engaging look at the founding fathers (and mothers) of fashion who set it up that way. Every aspect of the modern fashion industry is explored, from haute couture to high street, from catwalk to street style, and from glossy magazine to online blog. Some of the recurring themes behind fashion design are also explored, such as the influence of art, music and sport. Know-It-All Fashion includes everything you need to get style savvy.
The Know It All series takes a revolutionary approach to learning about the subjects you really feel you should understand but have never gotten around to studying. Each book selects a popular topic and dissects it into the 50 most significant ideas at its heart. Each idea, no matter how complex, is explained in 300 words and one picture, all digestible in under a minute.
Other titles in this series include: Know It All Anthropology, Know It All Chemistry, Know It All Classical Music, Know It All Energy, Know It All Great Inventions, Know It All Jazz, Know It All Medicine, Know It All Shakespeare, Know It All Whiskey, Know It All Wine, Space In 30 Seconds, Sports in 30 Seconds.

In this quick study of key fashion moments, designers, and modes, seven sections cover "Designers," "Themes & Inspirations," "The Media," and more. Chapters are preceded by a glossary, with snappy graphics and succinct write-ups on subjects such as Anna Wintour, China's impact on the market, the power of fragrance, and designer profiles. VERDICT Sort of a Cliff's Notes for fashion fans, this is great fun for younger readers all the way up to grandparents needing a refresher course.--LF

Each book in Quarto Press's Know-It-All series presents enough information, in a charmingly digestible format, to make anyone a small-talk aficionado. The volumes share a common format: 50 terms, names, or concepts explained over seven chapters. Each chapter begins with a two-page glossary of terms found in that chapter and a profile of a big name in the field. Each entry runs for two pages each: one page of information, one page of illustration. The information is divided into a thematically named three-second overview, three-minute at-a-glance information, three-second biographies, and cross references. Each book ends with a bibliography of books and websites, contributor biographies, and an index. Although brief, the contents are not elementary; instead, the Know-It-All books are sophisticated fun. Arnold's look at fashion covers several major designers, with an emphasis on British couture, but its real strength lies in discussion of womenswear themes and inspiration and the way high fashion reaches us in department stores.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2018, American Library Association.)
