It is estimated that one in five babies has unexplained irritability and is diagnosed with colic. Vartabedian, the parent of a baby with that condition, describes colic as a "wastebasket diagnosis," as it is now known that these babies most likely suffer from either acid reflux or milk protein hypersensitivity. Here he draws on his personal experience as a pediatric gastroenterologist at Baylor College of Medicine/Texas Children's Hospital as well as on the North American Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition's consensus on the management of infant and childhood reflux. He presents a wealth of information and practical advice, giving parents the tools to become empowered advocates for their baby. Beginning with a description and the seven signs of reflux, Vartabedian advises on how to recognize a sick baby, how to care for and handle the infant, and medications that may be helpful. He also discusses tests and studies. Finally, he suggests talking with your pediatrician about reflux during the baby's first year. Personal histories, vignettes, and black-and-white illustrations complete this wonderful, informative guide. Highly recommended for consumer health collections.Jodith Janes, Cleveland Clinic Fdn.
