Allá por 1982, Ryszard Kapuscinski empezó a tomar notas sueltas y aparentemente inconexas en torno a lo que sucedía a su alrededor, sazonándolas con grandes dosis de reflexión acerca del destino del hombre y el mundo contemporáneos. No tardó en descubrir que el fragmento no sólo se ajustaba perfectamente a su temperamento de escritor sino que, reunidos en un volumen, aquellos retazos de la realidad vivida acababan por formar, cual pinceladas impresionistas, un abigarrado y pertinente retrato de nuestra época. Paralelamente a obras monolíticas de Kapuscinski (como El Imperio o Ébano), se han publicado en su Polonia natal sucesivas entregas de Lapidarium (en noviembre de 2002 ha salido la quinta), cuya publicación hemos empezado por el tomo cuarto, por recomendación del propio autor.
